Pizza! Beer! Friendly Service! City Barrel Has It All!

Finally…..City Barrel Pizza + Patio has opened it’s new location, straddling the unofficial boundary of Brookside and Waldo at 120 E Gregory, in the former Bier Station space. Well friends, it was worth the wait, because this place has the similar beloved vibe of Bier Station with a few extra amenities.

You’ve probably noticed the large, brand new patio built right in front of the space, now featuring more shade, plenty of tables, sturdy swings that face street and outdoor games for the kids. Our neighborhood loves a good patio, and this is one of the best around–plus dogs are welcome! Inside the newly remodeled space, you’ll see a few tomato red booths, the same long (full) bar with several City Barrel brew offerings, an upstairs room for private parties and and an expanded menu.

Co owner Joe Giammanco says “We love being part of the neighborhood. Our staff is awesome, the space is beautiful but it’s the customers that give it the good vibe”. Joe talked with former owner Bier Station owner John Couture for years, expressing his interest in this spot when John was ready to move on. That finally happened in late 2022, (John is currently developing a new project, Local Liquid) and after dealing with all the usual construction and government red tape delays, City Barrel Pizza + Patio opened this sSpring.

Joe is especially proud of the pizza they are selling here; besides the usual topping options there are some unusual offerings that are quite popular: the “smash burger” and “sweet heat” pies, plus the “krab rangoon”. The New York inspired style thin crust was developed by Javier Nunez of Aurora Cafe and Bakery in Overland Park. In addition, there is a kids’ menu, three types of salads, a lunch special for $12 (large slice, salad and fountain drink) and coming soon: sandwiches. Joe says they have been very busy, especially on weekend nights; if you are in a hurry–order your food ahead for pick up. And when the snow hits this winter, Joe plans to do “snow days” like Bier Station did–they will open up with whatever staff can come in, and nearby residents can walk over to hang out.

Go by and check out City Barrel Pizza + Patio soon–the cooler fall weather is perfect for enjoying a beverage with friends on the patio or bringing the family over for a meal. City Barrel is open every day except Mondays. You’ll be welcomed by the friendly staff and tasty food!

Pizza Tascio Now Open in Waldo

Everyone seems to have their favorite type of pizza: some prefer a very thin crust with light toppings; some want deep dish; others crave a thicker, chewy crust heavy with cheese, meat and veggies.

And then there is New York style pizza, which is what you will find at Waldo’s newest pizza place, Pizza Tascio at 409 W Gregory.  What defines New York style?  According to owner Erik Borger, who grew up in New York City, a NY style pizza  features a “thin crust, definitely foldable,  with light toppings and a crispy, flavor filled crust.” Are you craving a slice yet???

Erik’s “obsession” (yes he used that word) with perfecting his type of pizza started years ago.  He was caring for his father who was battling cancer.  Dad and son were craving the pizza tastes of their younger days growing up in NYC, so Erik decided to make his own.   At one point he had six commercial ovens in the garage at his St Joseph home, trying to figure out the perfect temperatures and flavors.  When he finally  got the recipe right, he opened the first Pizza Tascio there in 2021.  In 2022 he opened a second location on Burlington in North KC and the Waldo location is…#7 in the metro area!  I asked Erik if he was a bit exhausted and overwhelmed with the fast growth.  “This location has been much busier than I expected. It’s far exceeded my expectations and we haven’t been open that long.  However, I have a really good team and they keep everything running smoothly”.

There are a few unique things about this pizza to note.  First, he offers one size of pie-18”.  Most “large” size pizzas are smaller than that, so even though the cost is a little higher, you are getting more of a high quality product.  These large pies are divided 8 ways for slices, and at Pizza Tascio you will get a large slice for as little as $5!  The superior ingredients Erik uses make a big difference that you can taste:  meats are sourced from Paradise Meats in Trimble MO; organic Napoli tomatoes from California, and he uses only 100% whole milk mozzarella.  I asked Erik about the phrase “no BS added” to the cheese he uses as stated on the website. He explained that most cheese has a fungicide added to prevent mold; he only uses cheese without any chemicals added.  It took a while but he found a source for his chemical free cheese…that is his strict dedication to perfection.   The menu focuses on various pizza combos of course, including an “upside down” pizza;  there’s a salad option, a dessert pizza and cheesy breadsticks.  You can dine in or pick up curbside.

Pizza Tascio is located in the former Classic Cookie spot at 409 W Gregory. Hours are Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm.

New Businesses Coming to Brookside/Waldo

A brief blog today with information on two new businesses coming to Brookside and Waldo….

Future Site of BKS Nails

Future Site of BKS Nails

The former James Hallmark shop at 6245 Brookside Blvd, vacant for over two years now, will soon house BKS Nails, a salon offering manicures, pedicures and waxing services.  Owners of this shop also own and operate Plaza Nails (on the Country Club Plaza) and Oak Nails (across from the UMKC admin building).  Look for this shop to open next month.

Do you remember PIzza Manifesto? That short-lived pizza joint opened last year next to the Chipotle at 75th and Washington, just west of Wornall.  It was recently announced that Pizzeria Locale will be going into that space at 505 W 75th St.  This ‘fast casual’ restaurant will offer built your own 11” Neapolitan-style pizzas, along with a few salads and sides options. Pizzeria Locale started in with locations in Denver and Boulder, then formed a partnership with Chipotle.  The KC location will be the first outside of Colorado.

No word yet on an official opening date for the eagerly awaited Heirloom Bakery and Hearth at the corner of 63rd St and Oak…
