Waldo Antiques Building Coming Down

waldo antiqueA fixture of Waldo for decades, Waldo Antiques and Furniture closed last year.  Driving by this spot at 226 W 75th St, just east of Wornall, was a visual treat–there was usually a few eclectic pieces of furniture or odd painting on display right there on the sidewalk.  It was a local spot–a place you could wander in and browse, finding something that you wanted to buy but didn’t necessarily need!

An LLC, comprised of three partners, recently purchased the building and plan to tear it down.  Working with El Dorado Inc, the new 10,000 SF building plans to host retail, services and office space.  El Dorado remodeled the Botwin building at the NW corner of 75th St and Washington –it now houses Boru and Crow’s Coffee.

Say goodbye to the old brick building; hello to a modern new one.  Let’s hope whatever goes up on the lot blends in with surrounding architecture. Now if only the old Brandsmart building on Gregory would be demolished…that place has been sitting vacant for years and is a real eyesore.  This area is prime Waldo real estate–I’m also looking forward to the street improvements planned for the 75th and Wornall intersection, although that construction is a few years down the road.

Thank you for supporting locally owned and operated Waldo businesses!

Brookside Ready to Welcome Two New Restaurants

Brookside will welcome two new restaurants shortly…Brookside Barrio and Brookside Poultry Company are preparing to open within the next few weeks.  Similar to building a brand new house–one can aim for a firm opening date but usually it’s a fluid process, as various vendors and contractors plus new staff have to come together at just the right time before the doors open.   Often a new spot is jammed with curious foodies the first few weeks, so it can be a challenge getting the service and food in sync while everyone is talking about ‘the new place to eat’ in our neighborhood.  If you are one of the first to try one of these new places, please be patient with the dining experience!

Brookside Poultry Company is  Brookside resident Charles d’Ablaing’s first restaurant, poultryhaving worked at Chaz on the Plaza, Webster House and Rosso (now closed).  Originally from Atlanta, the chef will focus on southern cooking with an emphasis on spit-roasted chicken, duck and turkey (locally sourced), plus cheddar biscuits, marinated fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits and key lime pie.  The restaurant seats just 30 people (no reservations) and  food will be available for take out.  In addition, patrons can rent the space for private events Sundays and Mondays when it is closed to the public. Brookside Poultry Company is located at 408 E 63rd St, (63rd and Oak) in the former Oak 63 space.

barrioIn the old Julian space at 6227 Brookside Plaza, watch for the opening of Brookside Barrio, a Mexican Kitchen and Bar.  This is the third restaurant for Chris Ridler, who also owns Sol Cantina on Martini Corner and Zocalo on the Plaza.  Menu items will include  grilled skirt steak with cilantro chimichurri, fried shrimp tacos and Mexican lettuce wraps (that sounds interesting!).  Brookside Barrio will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and will have outdoor seating as well–one of the best features about that restaurant spot.

Two new dining spots coming soon to Brookside for you to try…I’m excited about both of them, especially because they are locally based operations.  Now all we need is a new opening date for Plate…….hopefully this year!

KCRW is a benefit for Kansas City Community Gardens.  A portion of the money raised will go to this organization that helps low income neighborhoods and communities grown food in vacant lots and gardens.  Restaurants offer a multi course lunch ($15) and/or dinner ($33) during the ten day event through special menus that you can view online.  Many of the participating eateries are locally owned, so it’s an excellent opportunity to try a new place at a bargain price!  Reservations are strongly recommended.

Here’s a list of the Brookside/Waldo restaurants that are participating:

Aixois, Avenues Bistro, Michael Forbes, Nick and Jakes, Boru, Summit Grill and Red Door Grill.

Reservations and menus can be viewed at the KC Restaurant Week website.   Special deals run through January 21, 2018.  Enjoy some good food and conversation with friends while supporting Kansas City Community Gardens!

Shopgirls Now a Pop Up for Holiday Season Shopping

shopgirls

I was saddened to hear that Shopgirls‘ lease negotiations fell through with landlord First Washington Realty (the out of town company that owns a large chunk of real estate along 63rd St just east of Wornall).  According to the Kansas City Star, owner Katy Hamilton wanted to remain in her longtime location at 6245 Brookside Plaza, near Foos and 5B Candle, but First Washington would not allow her to stay past the lease expiration date of Nov. 30.  Shopgirls has been in business over ten years, and is known for it’s wide variety of women’s clothing and accessories that one can’t find in a typical big box department store.  And of course, the personal service was warm, sincere and friendly.

Fortunately, local Brookside landlord Joe Zwillenberg offered Katy a pop up space to serve her customers during the busy holiday shopping season.  Starting today (12/7/17), find Shopgirls at 6304 Brookside Plaza, right above Mr Goodcents.  Hours through December are Thursdays 4-8pm, and 2-8pm Friday and Saturday.

You can also find unique gift items and accessories at Katy’s other Brookside shop, Hamilton, at 6215 Oak.

Waldo Small Business Saturday Crawl-Tomorrow!

Why fight the big box/mall crowds on Black Friday when you can leisurely shop local on Saturday??

waldo

This Saturday, November 25, 2017 is Small Business Saturday–shoppers are encouraged to go out and buy holiday gifts from locally owned businesses.  Usually the selection is more unique, staff is friendly and the stores aren’t so crowded with frantic bargain seekers.

Waldo is hosting the Small Business Saturday Crawl from 10am-4pm this Saturday. Visit at least ten businesses, spend $50 and receive $10 in Waldo Bucks to spend later.  Details on this promotion are at www.waldokc.org.  A few of the participating businesses include Bier Station, Eclectics, Hawthorne and IvyMikes Wine and Spirits, Waldo Pizza, COCO Brookside and Family Bicycles.  You can see how easy it would be to spend a total of $50 in one day at these and other Waldo shopping spots.

Support your neighbors and local economy by participating in Small Business Saturday–or whenever you plan your holiday gift buying trips!

Brookside Home Sales Stats-Oct 2017

As we wind down toward the end of the year, home sales typically slow down.  Brookside home prices continue to beat 2016–it will be interesting to see exactly how much for the year  when I post final 2017 stats in January.  For now, here is the October 2017 single family home sales report for the Brookside zip code of 64113:

Road Construction Along Wornall in Waldo

Wornall Road is one of the most traveled street in the Brookside/Waldo area.  I avoid driving on Wornall south of Gregory through 85th St–the road is very narrow and usually always congested.

Wornall one

You’ve probably noticed that Wornall is now down to two lanes, roughly  between 79th and 83rd Terrace with some sort of construction going on.

I called KCMO to find out what was going on.  The City has contracted with Infra Source to replace the gas lines.  Expect this area of Wornall to have  just two lanes for at least the next thirty days while the company completes it’s work.

Alternate routes include Main St, Ward Parkway, Oak and State Line.

If you must drive along Wornall during the construction, please be considerate of the road workers, other drivers and allow for extra time.  It is an inconvenience but not worth a case of road rage!

Brookside Holiday Season Opener on Thursday 11/9/17

Brookside Coffee Battle? Roasterie vs. Starbucks

That title is a bit misleading…there are several places you can get a  coffee  in downtown Brookside.  But the recent Kansas City Star report about Starbucks possibly moving into the Goodcents location at 6304 Brookside Plaza has many residents concerned:  will our beloved Brookside become as bland and generic as parts of Overland Park (or Lees Summit, or Olathe, etc)?  I’m optimistic this is not going to happen.

roasteri

The Roasterie Cafe in Brookside

Brookside is the first location owner (and longtime Brookside resident) Danny O’Neill chose for his coffee spot.  It was an immediate success.  (Remember when there was an ugly gas station on that corner? I do, as I was carjacked there!).  Like so many locally owned Brookside establishments (think Stuff or 5 B Candle or Worlds Window), The Roasterie Cafe is similar to a village town pub: how often do you walk in and see someone you know?  It’s a gathering place not only for liquid refreshment but so much more:  students doing homework; parents taking a break with kids; getting a project done on the laptop.   Yes, all that can happen at an anonymous Starbucks but it’s special  at Roasterie.  It’s a different  feeling  because it’s local–and I think that unique, Brookside vibe is what neighbors want to protect.  The Roasterie Cafe is a great neighbor, supporting area  community causes and being so active in the our city.  Will Starbucks do the same? Perhaps. But it’s a big step above a national when the locally based business owner  is so involved,  visible and vested in his hometown.  Mr. O’Neill  doesn’t have to answer to Wall Street investors.  He can easily partner with other local businesses, use and promote other home grown products, create special blends for area restaurants, donate gift cards to  fundraisers.  You could probably even reach him directly on the phone!  And honestly, no Starbucks anywhere will ever have the same warm sweater feeling as an organically home grown coffee shop.

I remember years ago, when Starbucks opened at the corner of Westport Road and Broadway, just a few steps from the Broadway Cafe. There was an outcry at that time as well to keep national chains out of Westport.  After several years, Starbucks shut down and the Broadway Cafe is still going strong.  We have several chain stores in Brookside that neighbors  patronize; the mix seems to work. It is extremely expensive to open and operate your own small business, especially in a highly desirable  location with pricey rent like Brookside. Big national chains have  millions of dollars to play with.  That’s why it is imperative that we support locally owned shops, restaurants and services–here in our neighborhood and when travelling.  Brookside thrives as a destination shopping and dining area because of the unique, one of a kind places you find here….and because area residents recognize their importance and support them financially.

roasterie cup

Would Starbucks ever create something as unique as this?

Like many Brooksiders, I enjoy a Starbucks beverage every so often.  But I’ll always stop at Roasterie over a national chain. Nothing beats the creamy foam created on their lattes! Thank you for supporting locally owned Brookside/Waldo businesses!
