Celebrate St Patrick’s Day Early in Brookside This Saturday

*UPDATE!* Due to weather conditions, the Parade has been rescheduled for Saturday March 19 at 1pm. The route remains the same.*

It’s been two years since the parade happened in Brookside (and you know why) so this year’s celebration will be extra special: people want to get outside and socialize! Plus this is the 40th anniversary of the event, officially called the St. Patrick’s Day Warm Up Parade.

One of the things I like best about this parade is you can get pretty close to see all the floats, musicians, dancers, cars and participants along the route. Over 100 businesses and organizations are participating, so there is a lot to see! This is a family affair and everyone is welcome. The parade starts at 2pm Saturday March 12; be aware that several Brookside streets will be blocked off before 2pm for staging and crowd control. Watch for strollers and pedestrians! I’m posting the parade route below.

Plan on spending Saturday in Brookside! Support our local businesses by coming early for breakfast or lunch; stay after for a beverage, dinner or shopping. It will surely be a festive atmosphere all day Saturday in Brookside!

Brookside 2015 St Pat’s Parade This Saturday!

brookside st pat paradeSunny and 65 degrees…that’s our perfect weather forecast for Brookside’s 35th Annual St Patrick’s Warm Up Parade on Saturday March 14!  This is the best St Pat’s parade … because it’s so family friendly, you can sit and watch on the curb (or bring a chair!) and it’s easy to see the decorated floats and vehicles up close.

Start time is 2pm.  Here’s the route:

Begin at 65th and Wornall; north on Wornall to 63rd St; east on 63rd to Main St; south on Main to Meyer Blvd; west on Meyer to Brookside Road.  Last year the parade lasted over two hours!  This year I am extra excited about the festivities as I’ll be in the parade with my colleagues at Better Homes and Gardens – KC Homes.  We’ll be in a Jeep with the “Househunters” theme.

A few reminders:  traffic will be blocked along the streets mentioned above for most of the afternoon; residential side streets will be full of parked cars. Please watch for pedestrians, kids, bikes and be patient if you will be driving through Brookside on Saturday.  Happy St Patrick’s Day to all–come celebrate with us in Brookside!

Brookside St Pat’s Day Celebrations 2014

It’s not officially Spring until March 20, but I always think of the Brookside St Pat’s parade as the real kick-off to the warmer weather season.  And as of today, the weather is forecast to be partly cloudy and in the upper 50s for the big day!  Here are the details:

PrintThe 34th Annual Brookside St Patrick’s Day Warm Up Parade is this Saturday, March 15 at 2pm.  The route:  parade vehicles will line up along Brookside Road, and the starting point is 65th St and Wornall; turning north on Wornall to 63rd; east on 63rd to Main;, south on Main to Meyer; West on Meyer back to Brookside Road. Bring your lawn chair early to grab a  close in spot along the route, and watch for road closures and heavy pedestrian traffic  in the afternoon.

And if you plan to celebrate all things Irish on the official St Patrick’s Day, two Waldo bars make it easy for you to party all day on March 17.  One ticket gets you access to both Lew’s and The Well for the St Patrick’s Day Irish Hooley. Enjoy drink and food specials  plus live music at both locations.  And thankfully both spots  are close enough to walk back and forth!  Advance tickets are $5 online at www.waldowell.com or www.lewsgrillandbar.com.

Have a fun celebration with friends and family…and be safe!

2013 Brookside St Patrick’s Warm Up Parade

March 16, 2013: Brookside St Pat's Warm Up Parade

March 16, 2013: Brookside St Pat’s Warm Up Parade

It’s almost here…the 33rd Annual Brookside St Patrick’s Day Warm-Up Parade! The date is Saturday March 16, starting at 2:00pm. Here’s the route:
Starting at 65th and Wornall, the parade marches north on Wornall, turns east on 63rd St, turns south on Main, turns west on Meyer to end along Brookside Road.
This is a fun, family event with local shops, churches, organizations and schools participating. Viewers sit on the street curbs or brings chairs to the sidewalks–it’s easy to get close to the action and watch all the colorful floats and crazy cars going by. It usually lasts a good two hours from start to finish.

And if you’ve ever wondered how the parade got started…it was way back in the 1970s when patrons of Hogerty’s Tavern went out into the streets for an impromptu parade around the shopping district. In 1981, the parade became official, capitalizing on the popular downtown St Pat’s parade. The ‘warm up’ designation made Brookside the official kick off party to the City’s celebration. In the beginning, it was a pretty small affair, with mostly kids and school groups participating. Gradually it grew, attracted media coverage and a Grand Marshall was named to lead the festivities. Thousands turn out to see this event, especially if the weather cooperates, and it’s the second largest event for Brookside, behind the annual Art Fair.

Even if you don’t live in Brookside, this is a great day to visit the area. Bring the kids, a couple of chairs and enjoy the afternoon with us on March 16!

Brookside’s 32cd Annual St Patrick’s Warm Up Parade 2012

We are just a few days away from one of the most fun events of the year in Brookside:  the St Patrick’s Warm Up Parade.  It begins at 2pm on Saturday March 10, and lasts around 90 minutes.  The parade starts at 65th and Wornall, heads north on Wornall to 63rd St, east on 63rd to Main St, south on Main to Meyer, west on Meyer to Brookside Blvd.  The weather should be great!

2012 Brookside Warm Up Parade

2012 is the 32cd year for the parade.  According to LaDene Morton’s book, The Brookside Story, the first parade was started on a lark by the owner and patrons of Hogerty’s Tavern.  Virginia Kellog was running the merchants association at the time, and she decided to make the parade an official Brookside event.  The downtown KC St Pat’s parade was gaining in popularity, and Brookside would piggy-back on the celebration by having their parade a week early.

At first the ‘parade’ wasn’t very big.  It was mostly children from the neighborhood church and school groups who participated. One car would chauffeur the Grand Marshal of the parade.  Eventually, the parade grew in size and length to what it is today.  In the 1980s, the merchants started giving awards for various categories, including best music, best float and best theme.  The parade now has to limit entries, currently over 100, and regularly attracts local media coverage.  Local politicians and dignitaries to join in the fun, creating their own floats or walking along with residents.   This year’s Grand Marshals are Bob and Darlene Drummond, owners of Drummond Cleaners–a Brookside business since 1919.

One of the best things I like about the parade is that it’s a very easy parade to watch–you aren’t far back from the street so you get a good look at the floats and the riders.  It’s a true family affair, with many folks making it a party day on the front porch or lawn so friends can gather and socialize all afternoon.  The parade is one of the special annual events that makes Brookside such a special place to live.  Just be aware of the traffic closures and avoid the route area from late morning until late afternoon!

Brookside St Patrick’s Warm Up Parade 2011

This Saturday…the Brookside St Patrick’s Day Warm Up Parade! A truly fun, family oriented event for everyone…come out and see your neighbors!  One of the best things about this parade is that you watch it up close to the actual parade–chairs casually  line the streets, even those who are standing are no more than a few feet from the parade participants.

Here’s the details:

Saturday March 12, starts at 2pm.  The route begins at 65th and Wornall, continues north to 63rd, east to Main, south to Meyer and then west to end at Brookside Boulevard.  Streets will be blocked off early–to avoid delays, take Ward Parkway or Oak to go north/south; Gregory and 59th if you want to head east/west.

As of today, the forecast for Saturday is sunny and 50.  See you there!
